If youve driven a 1200 you already know that it has potential it just needs a bit more power. In search of power it is common place to drop the standard a-12 out and add something with a little more spice.

Quick background:

The 1200 came with the a-12 motor in all models very similar to the a-12 in a 120y, the latter sunny though came with an a-12, a-14 and the vanette also came with an a-12 or a-15

                       Power (flywheel)           Torque
A - 12               69hp at 6000rpm          70 at 4000rpm
A - 14               80hp at 6000rpm          83 at 3600rpm
A - 15               69hp at 5200rpm          80 at 3200rpm
CA18DET       175ps at 6400rpm         230 at 4000rpm
SR20DET        205ps at 6000rpm         280 at 4000rpm

120Y A-12 install:

If your looking to replace the old motor with another a-12 and think you can just get one out of a 120y and swap it beware, you'll face similar problems to an a-14 install in that the alternator is on the opposite side and the engine mounts don't line up, see a-14 install for solutions to these problems.

A-14/A-15 install:

This motor is the 1.4 litre version, it provides high reving with some torque, unlike the 1200 which will rev very hard but not have great torque down low, it is the right choice for race applications from rally to circuit as good power figures can be made at high revs.

The 1400 has its alternator on the oppsosite side to a 1200, meaning youll have to rewire to the other side of the bay but the two alternators themself are interchangable. Also the 1400 block has its mounts further back, which unless you can get a crossmember out of a 1980+ 1200 ute, youll need to make up two plates out of thick steel having two holes drilled, one which goes on the rubber engine mount and the other a few centimeters back which the bolt on the mount on the block will slide through, best way to measure is to hang the motor in position and measure (ill draw a diagram of the ones that were used to put a 120y motor in my car and give measurements soon).

The a-14 came with both round and oval ported heads, the a-14 included a bunch of emmision gear on exhaust manifold which can be blocked off when installed in a 1200 cause of the year of the car, the oval port head is a better way to go if possible. Unlike the 1200 the 14 runs coolant through the intake to warm it up, with these welded shut you can interchange intakes between a-12 and a-14 with round ports. I believe the 1400 thermostat has larger internal diameter. Some a-14's came with electronic ignition which can be wired in easily enough (most did not). The head, water, fuel and oil pumps, starter motor and gearbox, flywheel, thermostat housing (a-14 thermostat has larger internal hole though), fan (one has a longer cone on the water pump pulley which the fan mounts too though) are all interchangable between the 1200 and 1400.

The 1400 head has a hole for the alternator bracket on the drivers side where as the 1200 head has it on passengers (AUS) but the bracket can be mounted off one of the thermostat housing bolts by using a longer bolt if you've changed head.
